We Need Truth in Political Advertising Laws

Australia Institute research shows that nine in ten Australians want Parliament to pass truth in political advertising laws.

Regulating the truth is not impossible. We already do it. Australian consumer law requires truth trade and commerce. South Australia has had truth in political advertising laws since the 1980s.

Australians want advertising to be truthful and transparent. They expect the media to self-regulate, and want laws that would penalise misleading and deceptive political ads with fines, forced retractions or losing public funding.

Enough is enough. We need truth in political advertising laws passed before the next election.

Australians want advertising to be truthful and transparent.

Political advertisements that are deceptive and misleading interfere with the public's ability to make informed decisions.

We need truth in political advertising laws that are nationally consistent, constitutional and uphold freedom of speech to be passed before the next election.

Along with the corrupting influence of money in politics and retired politicians selling their knowledge of government processes along with their priceless connections to big business, the complete lack of oversight has ensured that media misinformation is major contributor to the public’s growing distrust of government. The rising inequality in our society is constantly used to spread hate and division by the same people and institutions that caused it in the first place; The Government, Corporations and the Media.

I strongly support the importance of introducing legislation to make truth in election campaign advertising a legal requirement.

It is enraging to see blatant untruths in political advertisements for elections unable to be challenged legally.

This is an important way to restore trust in politicians and institutions.
