Our research shows that the ABC is Australia’s most trusted broadcaster.
However, with the turmoil of the past week – from the abrupt and unexplained sacking of ABC Managing Director, Michelle Guthrie, to today's revelations in the Fairfax papers that the ABC Chairman himself pushed for the sacking of Emma Alberici after repeated attacks by then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, it is clear it is not enough to simply save the ABC – we need to fix it.
At a time when so-called 'fake news' is at an all-time high, when Australia's media ownership is being further concentrated, and journalism jobs are being cut across the country, has there ever been a greater need for a strong, independent and trusted national broadcaster?
The ABC is at a crossroads: the coming months are a critical period for the ongoing future of the ABC. The ABC is in the final year of its triennial funding agreement and its current budget has already been slashed, it faces a hostile government and a One Nation party who has said they want to 'whack' its funding come budget time.
